Intravenous Therapy and Venipuncture is a full day workshop designed to enable participants to understand, manage and perform intravenous therapy and venipuncture.

Course Description:

Intravenous Therapy and Venipuncture is a full day workshop designed to enable participants to understand, manage and perform intravenous therapy and venipuncture.

The course has a classroom and laboratory component:

The classroom component focuses on the theoretical and procedural aspect of intravenous therapy and venipuncture. It also covers the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system; fluid and electrolyte balance; and blood/blood product administration.

The laboratory component allows participants to practice and access veins in a rubber arm. Hypodermoclysis is a special feature of this course.

Objectives:

1. Discuss the role of the RN’s and the RPN’s in IV therapy and venipuncture

2. Understand the physiological implications of IV therapy and fluid-electrolyte balance.

3. Describe the procedure for administering blood and discuss the nursing care involved for patients receiving blood.

4. Demonstrate and establish intravenous and hypodermoclysis access.

5. Administer IV fluids, blood/blood products and medication.

6. Assess and describe the various complications of IV infusion; and be able to take appropriate course of action.

Prerequisite:

Students must be Registered Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses or other healthcare professions that comprise IV therapy and venipuncture in their scope of practice.
